Printable Subtraction Worksheets

Create subtraction worksheets with non-negative answers by default. The generator orders the two chosen numbers so the larger one comes first, and calculates a matching answer for each question. Older learners can explicitly enable negative answers when that is appropriate.

Create a math worksheet

Make your printable sheet

  1. Open Subtraction, set the number range and choose a short or longer question set.
  2. Leave Allow negative answers unticked for beginner practice. Set the title, theme, paper design and optional name and date lines.
  3. Create the worksheet and review it. Decide whether to include the key, then print or download the current set.

A starting example

With a range of 0 to 10 and negative answers off, a question may be 9 - 4 = ____ or 6 - 6 = ____. Both numbers come from the selected range. Enabling negatives can also produce 4 - 9 = ____. The answer key reflects that setting and the actual questions created.

Ideas for your activity

Use ten counters to model taking away. For 9 - 4, set out nine counters and move four aside, then count the remainder. Alternatively, count back on a number line. The worksheet leaves space for the written answer while your objects or number line stay beside the paper.

Check a subtraction fact using addition: if 9 - 4 = 5, then 5 + 4 = 9. Discuss one missed question with the key rather than simply marking the page. Fresh questions keep the selected settings, but save the worksheet first if you want to reuse the exact same set.

Common questions

Will beginner answers be negative?

Not unless you tick Allow negative answers. By default the larger chosen number is first.

Can I print with minimal ink?

Choose Ink-Saver. It uses white backgrounds, outlined artwork and clear text, without a large coloured title fill.
