Printable Word Search Puzzles

Create a printable word search around words that matter to your learner. Choose from ten ready-made lists or write a custom list. Each generated puzzle has a word bank made only from successfully placed words, with an optional key derived from those exact placements.

Create a word search

Make your printable sheet

  1. Choose Animals, Fruits, Vegetables, Colors, School, Nature, Space, Sports, Food or Transportation, or replace the list.
  2. Choose Easy, Medium or Hard and a grid size from 8 × 8 to 20 × 20. Enter words one per line or separated by commas.
  3. Create the puzzle, select a theme and output mode, then print or download with or without a separate answer key.

A starting example

A school list might use BOOK, DESK, RULER, PAPER and PENCIL. A space puzzle could use MOON, STAR, MARS and ROCKET. Short words and smaller lists are easier to scan; longer words need a grid at least as wide as the word. The maker explains invalid entries or lists that cannot fit.

Ideas for your activity

For a first puzzle, use Easy so words read left-to-right or top-to-bottom. Medium adds diagonals that still read towards the right; Hard enables all eight directions, including backwards placement. The worksheet instructions follow the difficulty of the actual generated grid.

Match a word list to a book, outing or spelling topic, then read the words together before starting. Tick found words in the word bank. New puzzle, same words rearranges the grid, so keep a downloaded copy if you need a later answer key for that exact puzzle.
