Printable Animal Word Search
Turn a favourite animal topic into a printable puzzle. Paprilo starts with a list of animals that you can shorten, replace or extend. Choose a small, easy grid for a first puzzle, or add diagonal and backwards words for a more challenging activity. The words shown beneath the grid are the ones actually placed in your puzzle.
Make your printable sheet
- Open the animal list, then keep the animals your child recognises. Use letters A–Z; enter a compound name without spaces.
- Choose Easy for left-to-right and top-to-bottom words. Try Medium for diagonals or Hard for all eight directions.
- Choose a page theme and output mode. Create the puzzle, check the preview, then print or download in A4 or US Letter.
A starting example
For a short first puzzle, try CAT, DOG, LION, BEAR and OWL in an 8 × 8 grid. The full animal preset includes longer words such as ELEPHANT and KANGAROO, which need a larger grid. If a word does not fit, the maker explains what to change rather than leaving it out.
Ideas for your activity
Read each word aloud before beginning. Ask the child to point to its first letter in the word list and then scan one row of the grid at a time. Circle each found word and tick its box so there is a clear record of progress.
Pair the puzzle with a library book or a discussion about habitats. After finding an animal, draw it on another sheet or sort the list into animals that swim, fly or walk. These are optional conversation prompts, not a lesson sequence tied to a curriculum.
Common questions
Can I use different animals?
Yes. Replace the preset with your own comma-separated list or enter one animal per line.
Will the answer key match?
Yes. It marks the actual placements in the generated puzzle. Tick Show answer key to include it as a separate page in both print and PDF.
